This section documents my transition from a corporate executive to an Executive PhD candidate — a shift driven by a desire to move beyond intuition and experience into evidence-based understanding. After years of making strategic decisions in fast-moving digital business contexts, I found myself asking why certain instincts worked, and how cognitive strengths shaped leadership performance. The answer led me back to an unexpected source: my classical music training. Pursuing a PhD at Antwerp Management School allowed me to connect threads that had long coexisted in my life—artistic discipline, executive responsibility, and a fascination with how people think under pressure. What began as a personal inquiry evolved into a structured research project examining how the mental frameworks developed through music performance influence executive-level decision-making. This journey hasn’t been purely academic—it’s been transformational. Navigating the rigor of doctoral research while remaining professionally active has deepened both my analytical mindset and practical leadership style. I’ve had to unlearn, relearn, and challenge assumptions I once held as certainties. Here, I share >strong>insights from the PhD experience itself: moments of clarity and confusion, methodological breakthroughs, shifts in perspective, and what it means to stand at the intersection of practitioner and scholar. These reflections are for anyone curious about doing a PhD mid-career, about bringing academic depth into business life, or about finding unexpected connections between disciplines that seem worlds apart.
