How three decades of intentional preparation created the foundation for breakthrough executive coaching methodology
When colleagues ask about my unconventional path from classical guitarist to C-level executive, they often focus on the apparent contradiction. But for me, each degree, each role, each transition was a deliberate step toward something larger—developing a systematic approach to strategic thinking that traditional business education simply cannot provide.
The Intentional Architecture of Preparation
Master’s #1: Music Pedagogy (Classical Guitar) – Hochschule für Musik Wuppertal, 1995
This wasn’t just about performance technique. Classical music training develops pattern recognition capabilities that most executives never access. Every piece requires simultaneous analysis of harmonic structure, temporal relationships, and interpretative decisions under pressure. These cognitive frameworks would later prove essential later when analysing market dynamics and strategic positioning.
Master’s #2: Cultural Management – Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, 1999
Bridging artistic excellence with business operations taught me something crucial: complex systems require different thinking approaches. Managing cultural organisations demands both creative vision and analytical rigour—exactly what digital transformation leadership would require years later.
Master’s #3: Executive MBAÂ – HEC Paris (consistently top-10 worldwide), 2014
After 15 years in C-level roles, I returned to academia not for career advancement, but for systematic validation. The Executive MBA provided frameworks to articulate what I’d been applying intuitively—how artistic cognitive processes enhance strategic decision-making in complex business environments.
From Intuition to Methodology
What started as personal curiosity has evolved into something more ambitious: a research-backed framework combining classical music cognitive principles with executive leadership effectiveness.
Roles at XING, Nokia, and DERTOUR Group became real-world laboratories where I could test and refine this approach:Â
- At DERTOUR: Customer interview data that traditional analysis couldn’t interpret suddenly revealed clear patterns when approached like reading an orchestral score
- At XING: Product strategy presentations demanded the same interpretative presence I’d developed performing classical repertoire
- Across digital transformations: Complex change management required the temporal mastery that only musical training provides
The PhD Journey: Academic Validation Meets Executive Experience
Now, as I begin Executive PhD research at Antwerp Management School, I’m systematically investigating what I’ve applied intuitively for two decades. The research question isn’t whether musical training helps executives—it’s how to measure, teach, and scale these cognitive advantages.
Here’s why the combination of experiences matters:
✓ Musical foundation provides the cognitive frameworks
✓ Cultural management bridges creative and analytical thinking
✓ Executive MBA offers systematic business application
✓ PhD research creates empirical validation and teachable methodologies
Why Traditional Leadership Development Falls Short
Many executive coaching approaches stop at behavioural modification—what I call a lack of ‘cognitive sophistication.’ Classical music training develops:
- Advanced pattern recognition for market sensing
- Temporal mastery for strategic pacing
- Performance presence for authentic leadership
- Interpretative discipline for complex decision-making
These capabilities cannot be taught through weekend workshops or standard business education. They require systematic development over years—but the encouraging part is that the principles can be translated into executive practice without picking up an instrument.
The Leadership Artist Advantage
What I’m building now—The Leadership Artist consultancy combined with PhD research—brings together elements rarely found in the same place: artistic cognitive enhancement, executive practice, and academic validation. This level of preparation is unusual, but the insights are transferable to leaders seeking stronger strategic capacity.
Looking Forward: From Personal Journey to Market Category
The Executive PhD represents the culmination of systematic preparation that began with classical guitar studies in 1991. Within the next years, I’ll have created the first empirically validated framework for enhancing executive strategic thinking through artistic cognitive principles.
This isn’t just a career transition—it’s positioning at the intersection of three domains that usually remain separate: music cognition, executive leadership, and academic research.
Executives gain enhanced strategic thinking capabilities.
Academics gain new insights into cognitive transfer.
The leadership development industry gains a new category that strengthens how leaders actually think, not just how they behave.
What patterns do you notice in your own educational and career choices—random moves, or deliberate preparation toward something larger?
